WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON REASONS MEN CHOOSE TO HAVE A VASECTOMY?
The decision to have a vasectomy is a very personal one and is made at a time when a man decides that he no longer wants the ability to father children. It comes at various stages of life – when a family is complete, when dating brings the fear of an unwanted pregnancy, or when a man just becomes certain that does not want to father a child under any circumstances. Many men take comfort in knowing that, in the U.S., more than 500,000 men undergo a vasectomy every year!
A No Needle/No Scalpel vasectomy is the ideal procedure for a man to have once the decision is made because it can be done quickly and lets you get back to normal activities with minimal down time. It is covered by health insurance or priced affordably for patients who do not have insurance. (See Cash packages)
Some of the common reasons for having a vasectomy are:
- Your family complete.
- You and your partner would you like to enjoy sex without the thought of an unintentional pregnancy.
- You and your partner want to stop using other forms of birth control.
- You want to have a minimally invasive procedure (the 15 minute No Needle/No Scalpel Vasectomy) to save your wife or partner
- from more invasive and more dangerous tubal ligation surgery.
- You don’t want to worry about an unintended pregnancy

HOW IS A NO NEEDLE NO SCALPEL VASECTOMY PERFORMED?
The No Needle No Scalpel vasectomy is performed in the comfort of Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center’s offices in Beverly Hills, CA and Los Alamitos, CA. This in-office procedure is typically completed in 15 minutes or less without painful scalpels or needles. No stiches are required, either! You can go home immediately after the procedure. We advise all patients to take it easy for next 36 to 48 hours.
Dr. Pugach uses a jet sprayer to numb the vas deferens so no painful needles or injections are needed. A special instrument is used to make a single small (3/16”) skin separation through which he performs your vasectomy. A tiny clip is placed on each end of each vas deferens and then the tube is cut and the inside is sealed. By not using a scalpel and making a small opening, no stitches are required. Your vasectomy site heals faster and most men report minimal to no discomfort for the procedure.
HOW DOES A VASECTOMY WORK?
A vasectomy works by permanently keeping sperm out the ejaculate. This is accomplished by blocking the passage of sperm through the vas deferens, a tiny tube that connects each testicle to the prostate where the ejaculate comes out. This blockage is performed with the remarkable No Scalpel technique. Once your vasectomy is complete, no sperm is mixed with seminal fluid so the ejaculate is considered “sterile.” However, multiple ejaculations are required to clear sperm out of the vas deferens before a patient can be considered to be sperm free. That’s why it’s important to return to our office so we can check a sperm sample after the procedure. We’ll give you more details when you have your consultation.
IS THERE PAIN DURING A VASECTOMY PROCEDURE?
No. A local anesthetic is used via a jet sprayer to numb the area of the vas deferens. Dr. Pugach recalls his vasectomy experience and says the initial spray feels like a slight rubber band snap sensation and then the area is numb. In our Los Alamitos office, vasectomy patients watch their favorite television show on a flat screen TV mounted on the ceiling. The procedure is over so quickly that most men don’t get to finish watching a full program!
WILL A VASECTOMY AFFECT MY SEX LIFE?
A fairly common misconception is that a vasectomy can negatively affect a man’s sex life. If anything, the opposite is true. The reality is that a vasectomy does not reduce a man’s sexual drive or his ability to get erections. Ejaculation doesn’t change. If anything, sex is better because it can be more spontaneous!
