Biofeedback for Men

Biofeedback

At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center we have been successfully treating women suffering from urinary incontinence and overactive bladders (OAB) with biofeedback. Biofeedback is a non-invasive office treatment for urinary incontinence that works by strengthening the pelvic muscles, decreasing bladder muscle sensitivity and stimulating the urethral sphincter to tighten.

Biofeedback has proven helpful in addressing many medical conditions, among them headaches, intestinal disorders, stress reduction and high blood pressure. In the field of urology, it can significantly improve bladder control.

HOW DOES BIOFEEDBACK WORK?

Biofeedback sessions are conducted by our nursing staff at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center. Small patches are placed over the pelvic and abdominal muscles and a small probe is placed into the rectum.

You are actually able to see muscle strength and activity on a computer screen as we coach you to contract the proper muscles to achieve the best possible outcome. Then, we gently stimulate the sphincter muscle with very low current electricity to help it strengthen and close.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS?

The overall goal of biofeedback therapy is to strengthen the pelvic and bladder muscles which help to hold back the urine. In addition, we can enhance a nerve pathway that can help you inhibit unwanted, sudden urges to urinate. The end result is improved bladder control.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS AND COMPLICATIONS?

There are no significant side effects or complications.

IS IT A ONE TIME TREATMENT?

No. There are usually 4 sessions, each lasting about 30 – 40 minutes. Based you’re your response, we can determine if additional treatment sessions are needed.

IS BIOFEEDBACK COVERED BY MY INSURANCE?

As with most procedures in healthcare, that depends upon your insurance plan. Medicare covers 4 treatment sessions. Other insurers vary, so our financial counselor can assist you in determining if this is a covered benefit for you.

IS BIOFEEDBACK RIGHT FOR ME?

Biofeedback isn’t right for everyone. But, in selected cases, it may be an excellent choice. Our philosophy at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, is to start with the lease invasive treatment possible, such as biofeedback, before considering more invasive treatments.
