PROSTIVA® RF THERAPY®

Minimally Invasive Treatment for BPH (An Enlarged Prostate)

For men suffering with the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, surgery and medication is often the recommended treatment.

Medications are effective in only 25% of patients on a long term basis and have limited effectiveness while causing potential side effects like dizziness and retrograde ejaculation.

Surgical procedures, such as a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate using a laser or electrosurgical device), remove the inner portion of the prostate but may result in life altering complications including urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction (ED), scar tissue formation requiring additional surgery or ejaculation problems.

Today there is an effective minimally invasive treatment that uses Radio Frequency (RF) energy to treat BPH!

What is Radio Frequency (RF) Therapy?

At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center’s BPH Center of Excellence, Dr. Robert Pugach uses Prostiva® RF Therapy, also known as Transurethral Needle Ablation (TUNA) Therapy, to treat BPH. The Prostiva system precisely delivers low-level radio frequency energy to destroy excess prostate tissue. The RF energy produces controlled, targeted heat to reduce obstructing prostate tissue. After the treatment the prostate tissue begins to shrink thereby allowing for improved urination.

These treatments improve urinary symptoms and can alleviate troublesome BPH problems for 5 years or more!

How is Prostiva® RF Therapy Performed?

Patients are given a medication to help them relax, and local anesthesia is used so the patient remains comfortable throughout the treatment. Dr. Robert Pugach carefully passes a small tube with a telescope through the urethra to the prostate. RF energy is then precisely delivered directly into the prostate to reduce the excess prostate tissue that is “squeezing” the urethra.

Upon discharge from our office patients will have a catheter for a few days to allow the prostate to heal.

Symptom improvement continues for up to 6 months after a Prostiva® RF Therapy treatment.
