presented
at the AUA Annual Meeting, May 2012
Dr. Robert Pugach participated in this one hour peer panel
discussion presented at the 2012 AUA Annual Meeting on the most
commonly asked question regarding in-office BPH therapies. The
discussion was moderated by internationally renowned urologist, BPH
thought leader, researcher and author, Claus Roehrborn, MD,
Professor and Chair, Department of Urology at UT Southwestern
Medical Center. Joining Dr. Roehrborn was a panel of three
experienced urologists who provided their own candid insights into
the history of in-office procedures, the benefits and challenges of
the most common BPH treatment options, best practices in patient
selection, patient comfort, and the management of patient
expectations as well as the safety, efficacy and durability data for
both Cooled ThermoTherapy™ and Prostiva® RF Therapy.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) was a prominent focus of the
2012 annual meeting of the
American Urological Association (AUA). Attendees from across
the United States and throughout the world came to learn about a
wide variety of issues that include the latest in genetic research
about urological cancers to ultrasound workshops to new treatments
for a variety of urological conditions.
For the BPH educational program Dr. Pugach was honored to be chosen
as one of three panelists in a far ranging discussion and
presentation about the minimally invasive options available to
urologists to treat BPH. Chaired by Dr. Claus Roehrborn, chairman
and professor of the Urology Department of the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center, the session allowed each panelist to
share his experience and treatment insights with the more than 300
attendees. The panel discussion was followed by a lively Question &
Answer session.
“We had the opportunity to educate urologists about the
advantages of in office BPH treatments - CoolWave microwave and
Prostiva radiofrequency - and show them how they can enhance patient
comfort, eliminate the need for surgery and produce long lasting
results,” says Dr. Pugach. “We also taught them that in office
treatments deliver better results than daily, expensive medications
without the side effects of medications. They also learned that in
office treatments are less expensive than surgery and medications
for patients and our healthcare system.”

MEET THE
DOCTOR...CAREER DAY AT LOS ALAMITOS MEDICAL CENTER
For the 2nd year Dr. Pugach
participated in Los Alamitos High School "Meet the Doctor"
Breakfast! Held on May 30, 2012 at Los Alamitos Medical
Center.
50
students from the local high school attended this annual event to
help them decide if a career in healthcare is right for them.
“I
love the opportunity to help them explore their future job choices
and understand how they want to serve our community in the future.
Los Alamitos Medical Center and our dedicated physicians come
together every year to help high school students understand the many
options they have to become the physicians, nurses and other
healthcare providers. We need them to become the healthcare team of
the future and it is an honor to help them realize their
aspirations,” says Dr. Pugach
Students were able to ask
questions about how doctors got their start in medicine and why
they became doctors.

In April 2012, Dr. Pugach and 15 other urologists from
around the world left their practices and convened in Charlotte,
North Carolina to teach each other about the most effective
techniques for training other physicians to perform High
Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to treat prostate cancer.
HIFU is the non-invasive technique to treat prostate cancer that
can eliminate the serious side effects of surgery and radiation
such as permanent urine leakage and erectile dysfunction (ED).
This meeting was an important forum for the world’s leading
experts to exchange ideas as Dr. Pugach and other physicians
certified to teach HIFU to other doctors get ready for US
approval of this remarkable technology.

New Alternative To Permanent (Foley) Catheter For Men
The Spanner Prostatic Stent
Dr. Robert Pugach, Medical Director
of Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, announces the
availability of The Spanner™ Prostatic Stent as an
alternative to permanent, indwelling foley catheters for men. “Now,
for the first time, there is an alternative for men who cannot
urinate due to an enlarged prostate” according to Dr. Pugach. The
Spanner ™ stent can be inserted in the office in just a few minutes
and eliminates the pain, messy bags and infections associated with
traditional foley catheters.
“This is one of the most exciting
advances for men in many years,” says Dr. Pugach. Now men can
urinate comfortably after treatment for either prostate cancer or
benign prostate growth. “As the leading practice in minimally
invasive urology in the western United States, Pacific Coast
Urology Medical Center is thrilled to be a pioneer and
offer The Spanner™ to our patients.”
The Spanner™ Stent:
·
Is easy to insert and
remove in our office
·
Permits a bladder to
empty normally without external tubes or bags
·
May dramatically reduce
the possibility of bladder infections

Dr.
Pugach visits Medtronic to discuss InterStim©
Therapy for Overactive Bladder
Press
Release and Patient Testimonial
In April 2010, Dr. Pugach was invited to the headquarters of
Medtronic, the leader in overactive bladder treatment technology.
Medtronic is the creator of the remarkable InterStim© device that
is 8 times more effective than treatments utilizing medications
or other therapies.
The visit to Medtronic was truly eye opening and amazing. Dr.
Pugach toured one of the production facilities where they make the
components for the InterStim batteries. “I was amazed at the
complexity and intricacy of the production and assembly process.
The sterile clean rooms and technicians using high powered
microscopes to precisely create these remarkable devices were
remarkable. To see the actual assembly re-affirmed my belief that Medtronic is the leader in this wonderful technology,” said
Dr.Pugach.
Dr. Pugach devoted a lot of time working with Medtronic engineers on
future ideas for new technologies to improve the treatment for
overactive bladders. “The Medtronic engineers are extremely
creative,” said Dr. Pugach, “and the opportunity to discuss and
improve their concepts can take their good ideas and allow
all of us to create new devices that will improve the lives of
patients who suffer from overactive bladders.” This is the same
process that has allowed Dr. Pugach to work with engineers from
other minimally invasive technology companies - including microwave
thermotherapy for BPH
and
HIFU and cryoablation
for prostate cancer – so that our patients receive the best in
minimally invasive urological care.

Is your
OVERACTIVE BLADDER always on your mind?
Women's Bladder Control Center
- Updates
Over 34 million Americans deal with
Overactive Bladder alone - that's about 1 in every 6 adults.
You don't have to keep the secret any longer. Common symptoms
include a frequent need to urinate, urinary urgency (a sudden need
to urinate), repeated bathroom trips that wake you up at night and
interrupt your sleep and, in its most severe form, urgency that
results in involuntary leakage of urine before you reach the
bathroom. Dr. Pugach
encourages you to schedule an appointment today to discuss whether
Interstim Therapy or
the other non-surgical procedures may
be right for you. To

Remember, no matter
what the answer is to your bladder control problem – from reducing
frequency to eliminating leakage, we have the answer at The
Pacific Coast Urology Women's Bladder Control Center. Talk to our

New Prostate Cancer Screening Guidelines!
New guidelines for prostate
cancer screening suggest that we should start looking for evidence
of prostate cancer at an earlier age. Presentations at this year’s
American Urological Association meeting indicated that patients
should start being tested as early as age 40. This is
especially important for men whose fathers (or relatives of their
fathers) have a history of prostate cancer – their risk of
developing it is at least twice that of the general population. In
addition, normal values for PSA (the blood test that can detect
prostate cancer) are being lowered. We believe that it should be
2.5 for men 65 years or younger and 4.0 for men over that age.
Why
are screening criteria changing? There’s no question that we are
still missing many cases of curable prostate cancer. Estimates are
that as many as 25% of men with prostate cancer may not have it
detected early enough. Once prostate cancer escapes the capsule of
the prostate no cure is possible. It may spread to lymph nodes, the
liver and bones. In addition, local growth can cause blockages of
the ureters, the tubes that drain the kidneys into the bladder.
Of course, the key to successful treatment is early diagnosis.
We’re on top of all of the latest guidelines, just as we are with
other areas of minimally invasive urology. If you haven’t had a
prostate cancer screening in the last 12 months, call us today to
schedule a convenient appointment to see Dr. Pugach. If you have
any questions, please feel free to call us to speak to one of our
experienced nurses. We’re here to help you! It takes only a few
minutes and is very simple. The results can save your
life. Don't delay:

Interest in our minimally invasive No Scalpel/No Needle vasectomy
procedure continues to grow dramatically.
The No Needle part of the procedure is true! Instead of using sharp needles to penetrate a patient’s skin to
inject novocaine, Dr. Robert Pugach uses a special jet injector that
sprays novocaine at the skin surface, allowing it to penetrate
completely without using a needle! Patients feel almost nothing
and effect is immediate.
Not sure?
Dr. Pugach can attest to the minimal pain and quick return to
activities from the procedure because he recently had a No
Scalpel/No Needle vasectomy. He was back to a full schedule of
activities within 2 days and felt almost no discomfort, either
during or after the procedure. It really works!

invasive services offered at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center. Schedule
