Dietary Recommendations for your Urologic Health

By Robert Pugach, MD

At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center one of our most important missions is preventative care.  It’s why we work closely with our dietician, Nadine, to help keep you healthy.  Here are some examples of the specialized dietary services we offer:

  • Kidney stone nutritional counseling
  • Prostate cancer dietary recommendations

Almost everyone knows someone who has kidney stones.  At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, we want to help prevent stones from re-occurring so our  patients can avoid  the pain, downtime and medical problems that result from this challenging condition.  Nutrition plays a key role in helping to control the symptoms and progression of kidney stones.  Our goal is to prevent problems before they occur!

What you are eating, as well as what you should not be eating, is extremely important when dealing with kidney stones.  We have always heard “eat your fruits and vegetables”, but some can cause problems for people who have a predisposition to kidney stones.  Some of the foods to be avoided are:

  • Dark green leafy vegetables

  • Oranges

  • Berries,

  • Unfortunately, all chocolate

If you are wondering why certain types of vegetables and fruit should be avoided by kidney stone sufferers, Dr. Robert Pugach, Medical Director of Pacific Coast Urology Medical Centers, points out that about 80% of all kidney stones are composed of calcium and other minerals, usually oxalate. Foods, such as dark green leafy vegetables may contain significant amounts of calcium and oxalate so they can increase the likelihood of a stone recurrence.  Berries are often a “no-no” when it comes to kidney stones as they have high concentrations of Vitamin C.  Most people we know love chocolate, but if you have kidney stones you should probably stay away from it.  It is another one of the foods on the do not eat list.

Prostate cancer diets are another important focus at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center.  Research now indicates that low fat diets may be beneficial in preventing prostate cancer.  In addition, certain vitamins and supplements, such as Vitamin E, Selenium, Lycopenes and Flaxseed oil may help in the fight against prostate cancer.  For years we have counseled our patients about these and other developments to help prevent prostate cancer.  It’s all part of our focus on disease prevention and maintaining your urological health to the fullest!
