In April 2006, Dr. Pugach completed his specialized training in HIFU – High Intensity Focused Ultrasound treatment for prostate cancer patients. This remarkable, non-invasive technology allows precision heating of the prostate to cure cancer without the complications of erectile dysfunction or urinary incontinence.

Special ultrasound beams are directed to within a fraction of a millimeter to heat and destroy cancer cells. Approximately 1% of urologists in the United States have been trained to perform HIFU and Dr. Pugach is proud to be a leader in this new technology.

HIFU is not yet approved by the FDA. It is in use throughout the world – examples include England, Japan, Canada, Mexico and several Latin American countries. It is now undergoing the rigorous clinical trial process in the United States and will likely be available for use in the USA within 2 years. At present, Dr. Pugach can treat patients out of the USA at several locations. Dr. Pugach primarily treats his patients at the state-of-the-art hospital in Puerto Vallerta.

HIFU is another example of the remarkable innovations in urologic care that have occurred over the past several years.
